Choosing the right photographer.

Choosing the right photographer involves several key considerations to ensure you get what best suits you and your family.  Here are some steps to help you pick a photographer:

1. Define what you are looking for.  Determine exactly what you need the photographer for. Is it for a wedding, portrait session, event coverage, commercial project, etc.?  Not all photographers cover every genre.

2. Check out their work. Look at the images that the photographer you are considering has posted on their website.  Typically this is the style that you should expect to receive.  Perhaps the images are too dark in mood and that may not be your style.  Their editing style should match your vision.  We have ladies that have asked us to alter their image to make them look slender or perhaps add more make up.  We have had customers ask us for bright and happy pictures when the photography was taken on a non-sunny day.  What skill level are you looking for?

4. How long has the photographer you are looking at been in business?  If they are a less expensive photographer or one that just started it and you are having a very important event, perhaps you want a more seasoned photographer.  Find out how long the photographer has been in business and if they have experience in the specific type of photography you need. Experienced photographers often handle different situations better and have a better understanding of lighting, composition, and posing.

5. Chat with your photographer.   If possible, meet with the photographer in person or have a virtual meeting. This allows you to discuss your vision for your event.  You can gauge each others personality and professionalism and see if you have found a match. Hart Photography offers fast and free wedding photographer consultations and family photography consultations.

6. Discuss Pricing if you want to stay within a certain budget. Understand the photographer’s pricing structure, what is included in their packages, and if there are any other costs for e.g., prints, albums, travel expenses.

7. Check Availability.  Confirm the photographer’s availability for your desired date and time. Some popular photographers may be booked well in advance, so it’s important to check early.  Some  wedding’s are book over a year in advance.  We recommend that you book your date as soon as possible to not have your favorite photographer snagged up.

8. Have a Contract and read any policies.  Review the photographer’s contract. You should have your payment schedules, cancellation policies, and other key items in your contract.

9. Finally, trust your gut feeling. Choose a photographer you feel comfortable with and who understands your vision. Communication and mutual understanding are key to a successful collaboration.  If neither you nor your photographer feels comfortable with the photography, do not pursue it.  Photography is an art and you don’t want to hire an artist that is not excited for your event.

10.  Seems old fashion but ask God for his guidance! Proverbs 3:6

By following these steps, you can find a photographer who meets your requirements and delivers the quality of work you expect for your  event.
